Ji Chang-wook Dramas and Movies: Where to Start and What Ties His Roles Together

Have you ever watched a character protect someone from the shadows and thought, I wish someone had done that for me? Maybe it was a man in a black cap leaping across rooftops, or a quiet guy who simply refused to leave when everyone else did. If that feeling sounds familiar, there is a good chance Ji Chang-wook put it there. He has spent more than fifteen years playing men who carry a wound and still choose to be gentle, and many international fans met him for the first time through one drama about a night courier who never showed his face.

Last updated: November 2026 — added The Scandal, Colony and Merry Berry Love, and refreshed upcoming projects.

Who Is Ji Chang-wook?

Ji Chang-wook (지창욱), also written Ji Chang Wook without the hyphen, was born on July 5, 1987, in Anyang, a city just south of Seoul. He started in small film parts and musical theater before landing his first leading role in Smile Again (2010–2011), a KBS1 daily drama that ran for 159 episodes. Daily dramas air every weekday and are mostly watched by families at dinnertime, so it was a quiet but solid start. It earned him an Excellence Award for a daily drama at the KBS Drama Awards.

The jump came in 2011 with Warrior Baek Dong-soo, a historical action drama where he played the title role. From there he moved between period pieces, action thrillers and romantic comedies. Today he is one of the few Korean actors whose new projects land on Netflix, Disney+ and big-screen theaters in the same year.

Three things people notice about him on screen. First, he does his own kind of action: fast, light on his feet, and often funny in the middle of a fight. Second, his eyes do a lot of the work. He can look like a lost boy and a dangerous man in the same scene. Third, he sings. He has recorded songs for his own dramas, and he has a long history on the musical stage, which is why his voice shows up in more of his work than you might expect.

Where to Start, Depending on What You Want

Why Healer Still Opens the Door

Most actors have one role that introduces them to the world. For Ji Chang-wook outside Korea, that role is Seo Jung-hoo in Healer (힐러, 2014–2015). The drama aired on KBS2 for 20 episodes and drew only modest ratings at home, but it built a large overseas fanbase and made his name known far beyond Korea.

Jung-hoo works as an illegal "night courier," a man who will deliver anything or retrieve anything for a fee, under the code name Healer. He lives alone, saves money for a quiet escape to a deserted island, and keeps every relationship at a distance. Then he is hired to watch Chae Young-shin (Park Min-young), a reporter at a second-rate tabloid website, and a buried incident from 1992 starts pulling all three leads — Jung-hoo, Young-shin and star journalist Kim Moon-ho (Yoo Ji-tae) — back toward the truth.

What makes the role last is that Jung-hoo has to be two people. As Healer he is cold and precise. Undercover as a clumsy junior reporter named Park Bong-soo, he is awkward and sweet. Watching him switch between the two is half the fun, and watching the walls come down is the other half. He also sang one of the drama's songs, "I Will Protect You" (지켜줄게), which tells you exactly what kind of hero Jung-hoo is.

If you take one thing from Healer, it is this: being good at surviving alone is not the same as being happy. Jung-hoo only begins to live when he lets someone in.

Every Drama and Film, Newest First

Merry Berry Love (2026)

Disney+ / Nippon TV · as Lee Yu-bin

A Korea–Japan co-production and his first Japanese series. He plays a Korean spatial designer who loses everything and goes to a small Japanese island, where he meets a strawberry farmer played by Mio Imada. It premiered on Disney+ on October 7, 2026, and marks his first romantic comedy since Welcome to Samdal-ri. His character does not speak Japanese, so much of the humor comes from two people trying to understand each other without a shared language.

The Scandal (2026)

Netflix · as Cho Won

An eight-episode period drama set in the Joseon dynasty, Korea's last royal kingdom. He plays Cho Won, the most famous playboy of his day, who enters a dangerous romantic wager with Lady Cho (Son Ye-jin). The story comes from the French novel Dangerous Liaisons and was earlier adapted as the 2003 Korean film Untold Scandal. It premiered on Netflix on September 18, 2026. It is a role built on charm with something colder underneath.

Colony (2026, film)

Theatrical release · as Choi Hyun-seok

A zombie thriller from Yeon Sang-ho, the director of Train to Busan. The Korean title, 군체 (gunche), means a swarm or colony of living things. He plays a member of a building's security team trapped inside with survivors after an infection spreads. It premiered at Cannes and opened in Korea on May 21, 2026.

How it was received: it became the fastest film of 2026 in Korea to pass one million and then three million moviegoers, and it broke even within ten days of release.

The Manipulated (2025)

Disney+ · as Park Tae-jung

An ordinary young man is framed for a brutal crime, sent to prison, and comes out wanting revenge on the man who set him up (Doh Kyung-soo, in his first villain role). The Korean title, 조각도시, literally means "sculpted city." The series was inspired by his own 2017 film Fabricated City. It asked him to move from innocent victim to someone nearly as frightening as his enemy.

How it was received: it went to No. 1 on Disney+ Korea right after release and ranked fourth globally in the Disney+ TV category.

Revolver (2024, film)

Theatrical release · as Andy

A supporting role in a crime film led by Jeon Do-yeon. A chance to see him play loose, unpredictable and a little unpleasant, far from his usual leading-man image.

Gangnam B-Side (2024)

Disney+ · as Yoon Gil-ho

A crime thriller set in the nightlife underside of Seoul's wealthy Gangnam district. He plays a broker who knows the streets and gets pulled into the search for a missing young woman. A tougher, more weathered version of the man who knows how the dark side works.

Welcome to Samdal-ri (2023–2024)

JTBC · as Jo Yong-pil

Yong-pil is a weather forecaster who never left his home on Jeju Island. When his childhood love comes home after a public disgrace in Seoul, he does what he has always done: he stays by her side. It is one of his gentlest performances and one of the most comforting dramas in his list.

Why watch it: if you have ever needed to go home to heal, this drama understands that feeling.

The Worst of Evil (2023)

Disney+ · as Park Joon-mo

A police officer goes undercover inside a drug ring in 1990s Gangnam. The role asked him to lose himself slowly, and the drama is honest about what that costs. Many viewers count it among his best work.

If You Wish Upon Me (2022)

KBS2 · as Yoon Gyeo-re

Gyeo-re grew up in an orphanage, has nothing and expects nothing. He ends up doing community service at a hospice, where volunteers help dying patients fulfil a last wish. Watching him learn to care for strangers is the heart of the show.

Why watch it: it is a drama about dying that is really about how to live.

The Sound of Magic (2022)

Netflix · as Ri-eul

A musical fantasy about a mysterious magician living in an abandoned amusement park, and a teenage girl worn down by poverty and pressure. He sings throughout, which makes it a good showcase of his stage background. The pace is unusual and not for everyone.

Lovestruck in the City (2020–2021)

KakaoTV (Netflix internationally) · as Park Jae-won

An architect falls hard for a free spirit he meets one summer, only to find she lied about who she was. The drama uses an interview-style format, as if the characters are talking to a documentary camera. It is about modern dating in Seoul and the small lies people tell to protect themselves.

Backstreet Rookie (2020)

SBS · as Choi Dae-hyun

A convenience store owner hires a chaotic part-time worker (Kim Yoo-jung). Pure comedy, quick to watch and easy on the heart.

Melting Me Softly (2019)

tvN · as Ma Dong-chan

A TV producer volunteers for a freezing experiment and wakes up twenty years later. His first drama after returning from mandatory military service. Gentle fantasy romance.

Suspicious Partner (2017)

SBS · as Noh Ji-wook

A prosecutor-turned-lawyer and a trainee lawyer get tangled in a murder case and in each other's lives. A mix of legal thriller and romantic comedy that is still a favorite for many fans.

Fabricated City (2017, film)

Theatrical release · as Kwon Yoo

His first leading film role. An unemployed gamer is framed for murder and has to fight his way out with help from online friends. The same idea of the framed ordinary man returned eight years later in The Manipulated.

The K2 (2016)

tvN · as Kim Je-ha

A former soldier becomes a bodyguard for a powerful political family and ends up protecting the hidden daughter no one wants seen. Heavy on action, built on the same instinct as Healer: a dangerous man assigned to guard someone fragile.

The Whirlwind Girl 2 (2016)

Hunan TV (China) · as Chang An

A Chinese youth sports drama about taekwondo. A rare chance to see him work in Mandarin.

Healer (2014–2015)

KBS2 · as Seo Jung-hoo / Park Bong-soo / Healer

See the section above. Twenty episodes, written by Song Ji-na, with Park Min-young and Yoo Ji-tae.

Why watch it: it is the clearest single answer to the question "why do people love this actor?"

Empress Ki (2013–2014)

MBC · as Ta Hwan (Emperor Toghon Temür)

A long historical drama set between Goryeo-era Korea and China's Yuan dynasty. He plays a young emperor who is weak, frightened and controlled by others, and slowly grows into his own power. It was one of the roles that convinced people he could hold a big production.

Five Fingers (2012)

SBS · as Yoo In-ha

A family melodrama about rivalry between two half-brothers in a piano business. He plays the rival, an early sign that he could play colder characters too.

Bachelor's Vegetable Store (2011–2012)

Channel A · as Han Tae-yang

A young man starts a vegetable business with friends. A small, cheerful youth drama.

Warrior Baek Dong-soo (2011)

SBS · as Baek Dong-soo

The origin story of a Joseon-era swordsman, adapted from a Korean comic. His breakout lead role in prime time, and the start of his reputation for action.

Smile Again (2010–2011)

KBS1 · as Dong-hae (Carl Laker)

His first starring role, in a long daily drama about a young man adopted abroad who returns to Korea. A modest beginning, but the one that put him in front of a nationwide audience.

What He Is Working On Now

The Thread Running Through His Roles

Look closely and a pattern appears: Ji Chang-wook keeps playing men who protect someone while hiding how much they themselves need protecting.

In Healer, Jung-hoo guards Young-shin without ever letting her see his face. He has decided, long before the story begins, that he does not get to be loved openly. In The K2, Je-ha is hired as a weapon and ends up being the only person who treats a frightened young woman as a human being. In Welcome to Samdal-ri, Yong-pil does the same thing with no fists at all: he simply stays on the island, year after year, so that the woman he loves always has a place to come back to. And in If You Wish Upon Me, Gyeo-re, a young man no one ever protected, learns to sit beside dying strangers and make their last wishes come true.

Even his revenge roles fit. In Fabricated City and The Manipulated, the story starts when an ordinary man is left with no one to protect him at all. What follows is what happens to a decent person when protection never comes.

This is why he speaks to the readers of this blog. A mother in her fifties may see in these men the way she has guarded her children quietly, without asking for thanks. A daughter in her twenties may see someone who is strong on the outside and still waiting for permission to be cared for. His characters suggest that both things can be true at once, and that letting someone in is not weakness. It is usually where the healing starts.

Questions People Actually Ask

Is there a Healer season 2?

No sequel to Healer has been announced. The drama was written as a complete 20-episode story.

Are Colony and Human X Gumiho connected?

No. They share the same two lead actors, Ji Chang-wook and Jun Ji-hyun, but Colony is a zombie film and Human X Gumiho is a separate fantasy romantic comedy series.

Is The Scandal the same story as Untold Scandal?

Both come from the French novel Dangerous Liaisons, and the 2003 film Untold Scandal was its first Korean adaptation. The 2026 Netflix series is a new adaptation with a new cast and a longer, episodic format.

If I only watch one of his dramas, which should it be?

Healer if you want the full range of what he does. Welcome to Samdal-ri if you want comfort.

Streaming rights differ by country and change often. Many of his dramas have appeared on Netflix, Disney+ and Viki, but please check what is available in your own region before you start.

Does Ji Chang-wook sing?

Yes. He has a background in musical theater and has sung on soundtracks for his own dramas, including Healer and Warrior Baek Dong-soo. The Sound of Magic features his singing throughout.

How old is Ji Chang-wook, and when did he debut?

He was born on July 5, 1987. He began with small film roles in the late 2000s, and his first leading role came in Smile Again in 2010.

Where He Is Heading

After years of alternating between action and romance, Ji Chang-wook is now working across borders — a Netflix period drama, a Korean blockbuster, a Japanese co-production — while still returning to the gentle roles that made people fall for him. The man on the rooftop in Healer has grown up, but the core is the same: someone strong who is still learning how to be cared for.

Which Ji Chang-wook character stayed with you the longest — and was there one who protected someone the way you wish you had been protected? Tell me in the comments. I read every one.
